Hidden Garden Cottage

Hidden Garden Cottage is a legendary jewel quietly sitting at the end of a quaint, very private old lane. This beautiful resident commands a special place in Saban legend since 1890 when Captain Thomas Hassell commissioned its construction. Like all Saban sea captains, he demanded of his home what he required of his ship: solid construction, durability and beauty. Hidden Garden Cottage has all these features and more. It is one of the most celebrated vintage homes on Saba, having appeared in numerous paintings and photographs documenting the island’s exceptional architecture.

These exquisite cottages, in perfect Saban vernacular, are rare—and rarer still is the privileged opportunity to reside in one.

Today, you can stay in The Hidden Garden Cottage and live the much sought after Old World Caribbean Dream, even if for a short while. Imagine walking up the original, lichen-covered stone path through stunningly planted tropical gardens surrounded by vibrant ginger hedges and original stonewalls. So much is original, yet seamlessly brought into the modern world.

You enter the cottage’s cool interior through an exceptional arched porch detailed with the island’s fancy trim. Beautifully restored antiques elegantly and comfortably appoint the rooms. So many original features remain intact. Each exterior door retains the original stained glass. Richly patinaed vintage floors flow throughout the open, airy rooms, each painted in warm white with beautiful soft blue ceilings. The original interior curved doors open into each room.

In the up-to-date gourmet kitchen, you’ll find the original old stone hearth that adds a level of authenticity to the home. The rooms are unusually large for this period and make for lovely living and entertaining spaces. The spacious and comfortable master bedroom has a modern bathroom that leads to an outdoor shower. A lovely study and TV room offer space to relax or work.

The exterior is as inviting and relaxing as the interior. The porch serves as a relaxing place to sit and reflect on the stunning views overlooking the Caribbean Sea and the historical village of The Windward Side. Pergolas create shaded spaces to sit or dine al fresco. While the cottage offers wonderful privacy, it is a short walk to Windwardside’s charming amenities.

The Hidden Garden Cottage is a perfect spot to quietly unwind and enjoy the relaxing pace of life on Saba.

El Momo Cottages

Many romantic souls fantasize about owning a boutique hotel in the tropics. Something small, charming, peaceful and earth-kind.

It is a rare opportunity to actually find one that is for sale, has a successful business track record, is part of the very safe Dutch Kingdom and comes with instant residency upon purchase of the property. Such is El Momo, a typical Saban cottage hotel built in the local architectural style. The hotel layout assures that the guests have their privacy and so do the owners. Life is vertical in Saba and the seven individual cottages (two with kitchenettes) are tucked into little gardens along a winding staircase up the side of the mountain. Each is nestled in a veritable rainforest of lush flowers and amazing trees and vines. Hammocks swing between palms, every cottage has a balcony overlooking the rich blue sea, the pool beckons and tranquility abounds. Nature lovers will be overwhelmed with the immense natural beauty of the hotel and the entire island. The large one bedroom owners’ cottage with private outdoor living space is also the reception area. It too has a great deal of seclusion and peace. No matter which building, every view from El Momo is spectacular especially from October through March where you can sit, relax and watch the extraordinary Caribbean sunsets.

El Momo provides new owners with the perfect opportunity to expand on the current owners “green” concepts and add their own personal details to the relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. With the growing impact of eco-tourism and the high profile of the island, the possibilities are endless. The hotel already appeals to divers and hikers, two of Saba’s tourism mainstays. Perhaps new owners could create yoga retreats or vegetarian cooking classes (Saba has wonderful organic gardens) that would appeal to a new set of tourists interested in well-being. El Momo also offers prospective new owners the joys of throwing off the corporate life style and immersing themselves in one of the last places where you can really live the Old Caribbean lifestyle of relaxed days, friendly neighbors, and tranquility as you like.

El Momo has been featured in many prestigious travel magazines including Conde Nast Traveler, National Geographic Adventure, and many dive magazines such as Unterwasser, Duiken and Outside Traveler Annual as well as many Dutch travel and outdoor magazines. The hotel has received very good reviews in the Lonely Planet Guide, the Rough Guide and on Tripadvisor.com.

Although El Momo is located in the charming and very quite Booby Hill neighborhood, it is a mere 5 minute walk to the lovely little village of Windwardside home to most of the island’s fine dining, shopping, internet cafe, banking, exercise studios and tourist facilities such as hiking information and dive shops. El Momo is also steps away from JoBean’s Glass Studio, a gallery specializing in locally designed and hand-blown glass jewelry.

El Momo combines a business with a new way of life that will transport you away from the everyday stress and into a new and exciting adventure.

Estelle's Captains Cottage

The old tradition of house building on Saba was a necessity that became an art form. Steeped in 500 years of sea faring history, these houses were often built for sea captains who demanded from their homes what they demanded from their ships…solid construction, durability and beauty. The sea captains positioned these remarkable structures to capture incredible sea views. Over the years, house building evolved into an art form creating the unique Saban vernacular preserved so perfectly on the island today whether the house is newly built or lovingly restored. Many of the older, historic homes have passed down in the family over long decades. Very few come onto the market. However, there are exceptions.

Such it is with Estelle’s Captain’s Cottage, one of the most historically significant homes on the island. Built in 1918 for Captain Rueben Simmons and his new family, this rare cottage stands today almost as it was over 100 years ago. It is believed to have been built by very skilled carpenters that were either friends or family of Captain Simmons. Remarkably the original stain glass windows are in place and well preserved. Captain Simmons lived to be 90 years old and was one of the last of the breed of sea captains for which Saba is famous. His daughter Estelle inherited the house. This remarkable home is now for sale and a perfect project for a passionate preservationist who wishes to create their own Old World Caribbean charm.

Estelle’s Captain’s Cottage sits on 3 acres of land providing exceptional opportunities to both preserve and upgrade the cottage proper, allowing for thoughtful expansion of both indoor and outdoor living space. The current cottage has two bedrooms, one bath, a kitchen and dining/living/hall area. As with most sea captain cottages, the views from this Hellsgate location are magnificent encompassing wide expanses of the sea, the mountains and the “old time era” cottage enclave that sit below Estelle’s. One of the original old stone trails snakes up from the main road and climbs up to Estelle’s Captain’s Cottage. The cottage also has drive access from behind the charming old church in Hellsgate.

Priced at $800,000, including both the historic structure and the land, Estelle’s Captain’s Cottage is an unparalleled opportunity to rekindle the beauty of this important historic home.

To fulfill the dream of living a custom Caribbean life style, you must begin with the perfect slice of land carved out of the mountainside overlooking the sea; peaceful and secluded yet close to urban life…island style.

This is a special place to create your own private paradise. Such is Earthaven, a stunning parcel of Saban land that sits 1500 feet above sea level with amazing views of the ocean, Booby Hill, the Level and beyond to the neighboring islands. Filled with tropical foliage, Earthaven quietly straddles the Mt Scenery trail and the outer edges of Saba’s most charming and picturesque village, Windwardside.

The location feels “off the grid”, yet the amenities of modern life are readily available such as electricity, wifi, telephone and even FedEx deliveries. Plus you are only a 5 minute walk to the village. The property lends itself to an eco or green build in a retreat style mode. Or perhaps build a jewel of a Saban cottage upgraded for today’s lifestyle. With a lot size of 6700 square meters or about 1.6 acres, the property would accommodate a nice size structure with swimming pool and loads of outdoor living spaces.
