When you visit Saba, it’s about the view, the architecture and Old World Caribbean lifestyle. Nearly There Cottage has it all. This beautifully renovated cottage sits 1000 feet up a mountainside constantly caressed by cooling trade winds. From that magnificent vantage the breathtaking horizon goes forever. Your eye is immediately drawn to Saba’s charming little airport with the world’s smallest commercial runway; beyond are the crashing waves on volcanic rocks. The view expands with the endless azure of the Caribbean Sea dotted with the peaks and valleys of St Maarten, Anguilla, St Barth’s, St Eustatius, Nevis, and St Kitts and on a very clear day all the way to Montserrat. It is a perfect painting of a Saba view and peacefully entertaining all day long.
Yet the house sits in a very private enclave at the end of a little traveled cul-de-sac with only two other beautifully upgraded old cottages. Originally constructed as a land based hideaway in 1989 by an itinerate Caribbean sailor, the cottage has been beautifully renovated the space into a real Caribbean dream. It is a perfect place to escape and get away from the hectic world.
Enclosed by a lovely white privacy fence, the verdant tropical grounds of Nearly There Cottage are as lovely and well thought out as the inside. You can relax in a beautiful lap pool surrounded by a 6’ high retaining wall crafted from native volcanic stone or luxuriate in an 8-person outdoor hydrotherapy spa. Dine or unwind on 2000 square feet of Italian terra-cotta tiled outdoor living space that overlooks the specular views.
There are two covered porches; one facing the sea and the other is leeward to provide a protected space for al-fresco dining and cooking in the custom outdoor kitchen and grill. After a long day of island activities, the totally private outdoor shower, built from native stone, provides a refreshing rinse off.
The interiors reflect a meticulous attention to detail. Italian tiles flow through from floors into the showers. Custom red oak millwork, vaulted cypress and cedar ceiling and custom Kraft-Maid cabinetry add practical beauty. The main living area is a large open plan room with high vaulted cypress ceiling that offers an inviting space for entertainment, relaxation, dining and cooking. The kitchen is beautifully organized with upgraded appliances and details. The room is cooled by elegant ceiling fans and ambiance lighting is provided by wall sconce artwork lighting.
Downstairs are two comfortable ensuite bedrooms. The master suite has a queen size bed and features 12 foot vaulted ceiling, exposed structural wood beams, custom red oak shelving, a spacious walk-in closet and an impressive custom red oak sliding “barn door”. The second bedroom contains a double bed plus an ensuite bathroom, spectacular views and built in closet. Additional sleeping quarters with a single bed are available in an upstairs loft accessed from an old-fashion sliding “library ladder”. A sofa in the living room accommodates another guest for a total of 5 guests. Rooms are cooled by the trade winds and ceiling fans.
