Rainbow Cottage is a quiet and peaceful place set high on a hill overlooking a wide expanse of the sapphire blue Caribbean and verdant green hills and valleys. It is very private, with the occasional red roof in the distance and an incredibly view filled with tropical foliage and the sea. The sunrise is simply gorgeous as you gaze out to St Barth’s and beyond to the horizon. In the evening, the colorful reflected sunset followed by the moon rising from the sea is breathtaking, especially when the moon is full. Although the atmosphere is one of solitude and quietness, you are just a short walk into the charming village of Windwardside with its restaurants, shops and amenities.
The cottage is pure Saban vernacular, one of about 125 authentic heritage cottages left on island, complete with the original chimney and stone kitchen. These very special old homes are rarely offered for sale as they remain in the family for generations. Built by the Hassells, one of the original Saban families, the structure features all the Saban touches; white clapboard exterior with green trim, Caribbean fretwork, shutters and the classic red zinc roof. It is pure architectural poetry. The cottage is accessed by a private drive, allowing easy parking for your car. The cottage’s interior layout follows Saban tradition. The entryway faces the stunning Mount Scenery. A long sitting veranda with terracotta floor runs along the front and faces a pretty terraced tropical garden featuring bananas, avocado and frangipani. The mood is very peaceful. The gardens continue around the house. The living room is just off the veranda and flows into the kitchen and dining area. The interior features original stonework complemented by local artist Robbie Lynn’s work designed to reflect the old rock lined kitchen. Original wide plank wood floors flow throughout the house. High ceilings and arched doorways create an airy, open feel. A large double terrace off the dining/kitchen overlooks spectacular views of the sea and mountains. Wide sliding glass doors bring the view inside. In addition to the front and back terraces, a lovely gazebo is on the lower level; designed by a Canadian architect known for his outdoor structures for national parks. From morning coffee to evening beverages, you never want to leave.
The two bedrooms sit on either side of the great room, both with an ensuite bathroom. The bathrooms have been upgraded with low flow toilets, new vanities and sinks. Large double cisterns provide an adequate water supply. Each bedroom features an air conditioner, although the natural breezes keep the entire house cool and pleasant year round.
Rainbow Cottage is a wonderful opportunity to meld into the gentle and authentic pace of Saban life. Just bring your vision and personal touch to this charming, authentic and well-loved cottage. It is your own private tropical oasis set within one of the most stunning islands on Earth.
